If your argument is that Allende was abusing his power (a legitimate one), he could have been impeached and removed from office by the National Congress or defeated in a free and fair election. But Allende was just a pretext to turn Chile into a Chicago School guinea pig.

Individual images don't prove points, data does.
If you want to compare via HDI, Chile is bested by Argentina in total, and usually is anywhere from 3rd to 5th place on individual categories, even with Venezuela. Ultimately, most of South America is around the same level.

>>
>>2171707
If they were like the USSR, they would not do much trading and would be a closed economy. Partly due to sanctions, but they would still do that anyways imho.

But if they did trade, they would compete with big corn in the US as a sweetener, so it would be hard to say exactly what.

The USSR was still around for most of the chart, during which Cuban gdp per capita went from in-line with world GDP per capita to faaar below the average.

>and their neighbor hates them?

The USA's embargo against them wouldn't even come close to making up from the difference of free subsidies they got in handouts from the USSR. For context, trade with the USA only accounts for like 5% of the DR's GDP.

When Cuba lost those free handouts their economy contracted by 30%, because the Commies were such fucking shit that Soviet handouts was the only reason they were able to function.

There was one exception to the rule that all our foes have committed and that is the Decadence Assumption. Ho Chi Minh never underestimated America. His avowed hero was George Washington and he remained in awe of the U.S., all his life. He remains the only enemy leader who ever defeated us at war, and then only because our hubris (not decadence) got the better of us.

People who criticize right-wing dictatorships in Latin America underestimate the risk those countries had of falling to communism and becoming absolute shitholes.

>but muh Cuba, muh HDI

Cuba didn't actually improve much from the 50s, when it was already one of the most developed countries in the region, and this after tons of Soviet support which tried to make it a model in the region. Chile, Argentina or Brazil wouldn't have the same support, they would fall to Ethiopia or Cambodia levels of poverty and violence.

Pinochet, Videla, Castelo Branco, Stroessner, D'Aubuisson, Rios Montt, they did nothing wrong.

Anyway, to elaborate on this point, think about *why* the lower classes were attracted to Communism. While Marx thought it would first come to the the most industrialized countries, the places where it either took power or came close to it were usually backwater authoritarian states where the common people had little to no political representation and a very small slice of the pie (Latin America has the worst social inequality in the world). After he seized power in Cuba but before he adopted communism and turned to the USSR for support, Castro asked the United States for a Latin American version of the Marshall Plan. It was also driven by the United States' past meddling in the region; there were multiple military interventions to protect American corporate interests from populist governments in Nicaragua, Honduras, and other countries, something which ended under FDR but started again with Eisenhower's support for the Guatemalan coup in 1954.

If the lower classes have political representation, they're less likely to be attracted to radical ideologies. See: the relative lack of political violence in liberal democracies compared to authoritarian/pseudo-democratic states.

Castro visited the US in 1959, insisted he wasn't a Communist, and asked for American support. He didn't nationalize property and side with the Soviets until the year after.

Videla destroyed the argentinian economy. Before him we had no structural poverty, no indigence, no unemployment, no external debt, and a strong industrial structure. He left us with an unpayable debt that screwed us for the next two decades, the destruction of the industry left us with high structural unemployment and prone to external crises, there's more people under the poverty line each decade, and he basically created indigence in the country. Also, the "risk of falling to communism" was zero, as admitted by the army itself, the guerrilla were less than a thousand people and had already been suppressed before the coup.

At least chile's economy kinda worked out in the long term, so pinochetists have that going for them. Videlafags are literally retarded edgelords.

True--Pinochet was far from the worst by death count compared to the Brazilian, Argentine, or Paraguayan juntas. What am I whitewashing? You were the one who avoided defending Pinochet's crushing of dissidents by bringing up the Spanish Civil War.

I don't want to waste my time on a dick-measuring contest of which regimes murdered more civilians. My point is that Latin American military juntas were bad and that countries where the interests of the lower/working classes are represented are less likely to fall to violent revolutions. The right likes to point to the successes of Chile and the failures of Venezuela (note: I think Maduro is shit); I'd point to Uruguay, which has seen stability and prosperity under center-left governments.

The greatest legacy of Pinochet is not the economy, but the political system of Chile.

Pinochet studied Marxism and he knew how Western Marxists were more prone at using cultural hegemony, subterfuge and control of institutions to reach power than actual military strenght. So after he did away with the commie guerrillas, he began a process, aided by Jaime Guzman and his ideology of "gremialismo", of creating a strong social basis for his anti-communism in civil society. To this day, the "Union Democrata Independiente", the party created by Guzman according to his political theories, is the only legitimate right-wing anti-communist party in Latin America. This bulwark, coupled with the legacy of the Constitution that Pinochet bestowed prevented Chile from jumping in the Bolivarian bandwagon that sweeped Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, etc

Had not been for this Chilean wealth would be squandered and the country would be as bankrupt as Venezuela. That's why it's safe to say Pinochet not only has saved his country, but he is still saving it, and he will save it until his Constitution remains in force.
>>
>>2182871
You´re overrating the chilean right too much.
They had only won one election since Pinochet left (2010), all the rest were won by the christian democrats and the current leftist coalition.
>>
>>2182915
At least Chile has a right.

Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela has no right-wing. In those countries, parties in Chile that are on the "left" like the PDC, PPD, or PRSD would be considered "right-wing" (the same way christian democrats, social liberals, radicals and social democrats are considered right-wing in the rest of Latin America).

Besides, the institutional damage the left can do in Chile is limited by the Constitution, though I've heard they are changing that. In the end, Latin America will always be Latin America and will always revert to indigenous socialism, but Chile has been able to hold back for decades thanks to Pinochet political legacy, his greatest legacy.

Not so different from people crowing about Venezuela's social policies then going silent after 2014 into "no real socialism" mode.

But my point here is not actually about policy. It's about ideological currents in society, it's about social basis for political parties, it's about institutional control over the cultural reproduction apparatus of the society. Chile in this regard is unique in Latin America in the sense that the right has managed to build a social basis, there are even right-wing student associations, something that is unthinkable in Brazil, for example (though I've read they are losing strenght, again, this is Latin America, and everything returns to socialism, it's the fucking indigenous blood).

Allende and his administration wasn't perfect, however, due to the nature of former Spanish holdings turned nation states in the New World - the blanco and castizo classes of landowners and gentry were going to resist any attempt to disenfranchise their stronghold over Chilean society. I'm not a Communist but being a Latin American Communist is much different than le epic Marxist of academia who could never survive on the calle. Furthermore, there is absolutely no recourse to the tortures inflicted upon the Chileans by their own military under Pinochet which can only be described as Satanic and beyond any concept of human decency. There remained widespread poverty and fear in the streets even though the old money of Chile was protected, keeping "economic stability" per second even though the moreno y mestizo classes got completely shit on during this time.

I lived in Nicaragua. I would have fought with the Sandanista because they were just trying to make sure their people could eat and go to school and the woman not get raped by the army.
>>
Anyone who thinks Pinochet (and the military governments in Latin American in general) was a net negative is either a communist apologist or doesn't know shit about Latin American politics. Probably both.

>But Pinochet was bad, he tortured people and threw them into the ocean and--

Yes. That was bad. But we are talking on whether Pinochet was a NET positive or not, not whether he was an angel.

>brah, if Allende was so bad, just impeach him

Yeah, just do that. He is just a politician, right?

Christ, in Brazil the 2016 Rousseff impeachment led to one hell of a political and social crisis, with every leftist agitator being sent to the streets to break things, invade property and create chaos in general -- now imagine such a thing in a context of (1) Cold War (2) nowhere near the poor stability we have today (3) Cuban militias acting throughout the continent in an attempt at bringing revolution.

"just impeach him, brah" is not a solution, particularly if your guy is doing everything in his power to bring about socialism in collusion with (3).

But imagine if it could have been done. Imagine if Allende had been deposed through impeachment, replaced by some parliamentary weakling. What would have happened? The revolutionary militia would still be there, and they wouldn't have been quashed like they were by the military. If they didn't succeed at their goals, they probably would have been fought to a standstill, at which point they would have merged with the drug cartels and create a continent-wide FARC.

In that context, Pinochet (along with the Brazilian military junta) were the best things that could have possibly happened to their countries. Fuck your communist apologism.

You have only regurgitated memes from Latin American left-wing historiography, you have not managed to prove that Chile under Allende would have seen a better result in the end than what happened under Pinochet.

Considering how things have turned out in Venezuela. Those "people who tried to make sure their people could eat and go to school", who wanted to enfranchise the mestizos and pardos, who did everything the Latin American Marxist had ever desired, managed to get power and implemented their desired policies. How did that turn out?

They numbered 10,000 by the time Pinochet enacted his coup. Pinochet managed to crush them killing only 3.000 people. This is not a bloodthirsty tyrant, but a restrained leader who does like this. Remember that many Latin American intellectuals love Stalin, who would kill hundreds of thousands persecuting organizations that didn't even exist.

It was funny watching the same leftists who, when Osama bin Laden died, said that no one should cheer another human being death, cheering when Thatcher died.

Everytime the left exposes their hypocrisy they lose more support. I seriously believe this blatant case influenced the 2015 elections and Brexit later.
