What are some arguments for (or against) the necessity of war in human civilization?

Recommend books, if there is any, about this subject.

If you have nice shit and someone else doesn't, what's to stop him from taking your shit. If you all have nice shit and they don't, what's to stop them from taking all your shit?

His real claim to fame was Fallujah, probably one of the few instances where the Muj was without a doubt BTFO.

It just showed that he knew how to handle a insurgency with the right resources and managed to lead his Marines and supporting Army units to wrek the Muj without causing a majir political shitstorm.

Plus I heard he carries the Meditations od Aurelius everywhere he goes in combat

Blood Meridian. Is a historical fiction novel centered around an actual band of scalp-hunters that operated in Mexico in the mid-1800's. However the legitimate verifiable history ends at pretty much the names of the characters, as the book tells its own rather depraved story.

Judge Holden, a member of this band, gives rather long-winded yet poignant dissertations on the nature of war. I'm sure it'll be right up your alley. To top it off the book itself is also fantastic.

War isn't necessary to have a civilization.

However, it speeds up technological progress leaps and bounds.

Internet, space travel, computers, are all things that would probably still be in their infancy had it not been for WW2 and the Cold War.

Nothing stimulates creativity and funding for new machines to make XYZ than war.

nice meme

War just redirects spending towards 1 product like a better tank or aircraft giving the impression science has advanced rapidly while less conspicuous yet far more important technology has to wait. Also technological changes already taking place can result in arms races and war, the dreadnought is a good example.
>>
>>2172659
Actually this isn't true, warfare retards technological progress by interrupting technological development

It's true technological innovations did come from conflicts, but what is often overlooked in the "pro-war" argument is the huge damage to infrastructure it creates for both warring parties.

No conflict is worth the scientific progress when the plumbing system is completely destroyed, educated civilians are massacred, and every factory lies in rubble. The only reason America enjoys the benefits of every innovation from WW2/Cold War without any repercussions is mostly because our infrastructure was barely even touched in WW2 or in the Cold War.

>what about post-war nations that had their infrastructure destroyed but look perfectly fine today

Many post-war nations after WW2 enjoyed little of these innovations as they were economically destroyed. Sure they enjoy them today, and some are wealthy first world nations. However, this is only because America, and the United Kingdom, gave aid to these impoverished post-war nations just after the war. If American and the UK didn't invest in these nations modern day Germany would probably look a lot like modern day Poland.

Besides market forces, international economic competition, and government funding are enough for scientific innovations for now. In fact I don't think we even have a choice in our modern world. The trade off for modern war is the chance, not the guarantee, of technological innovation in exchange for global instability followed by a potential nuclear holocaust. A trade off far to risky and foolish for anyone to reasonably mull over.

also the scientific progress comes from funds being redirected towards inventions, it's the smart scientists who are to be credited and resources, not war itself
