What is a proper balance between ancient European beliefs and Christianity?
It's clear that both have a major role to play in the (typically Indo-European) history of western civilization.
How much, if any, of a place is there in our traditions for the old ways?
I'm namely thinking of things like the Christmas and Easter festivities (both Christian) having Germanic pagan influence (Eostre spring fertility celebration-Easter bunny and eggs, Yuletide boar-Christmas ham, and the Yule log to name a few).

What's the proper balance, /his/?

Non Germanic countries call Easter the paschal season and it has nothing to do with Germanic beliefs.

What do bunnies and eggs have to do with the death of Christ?
I'm not saying that specific brand of syncretism is everywhere, (I'm pretty sure Eostre was only documented in the Anglo-Saxon brand of Germanic religion) but that's clearly Germanic religion-influenced.

Read St. Bede for more, but "Easter" is just modern English for the name of an old Germanic goddess. It is now synonymous with "Passover" aka "Pascha".

All paganism is heresy and must be removed

Sure dude. I think what your missing is that old ways are already seamlessly mixed into mythos all over the world. No one has a problem unless someone makes it a problem.

Out of curiosity, Protestant, Catholic, or Orthodox?

Well that's the point of the thread. I just want discussion and opinions, I'm not arguing for one or the other yet.

It's a shame some kind of Shinto/Buddhist relationship could have never been worked out.

Syncretism between Shinto and Buddhism?
Or between Shinto/Buddhism and Christianity?

If the former, I'm awful certain Japan has it.

What is the right balance between paganism and Christianity? Whatever theoretical answer you may think about, Catholicism has perfected it in practice over hundreds of years. The Christian Middle Ages is the realization of Plato's republic. Then there was the Renaissance, which only appeared platonic on the outside, but actually gave way to what Plato called an oligarchy, the rule of the merchant class, a corrupt regime, and its ideological expression in humanism. This upset the balance and was the beginning of the end of western civilization, following the steps which Plato accurately predicted in the Republic, leading to mass democracy and socialist tyranny, which is the phase we're entering now.

TL;DR Catholics got it right before Vatican II

Christianity adopted local traditions as it spread around. It seems to me like the balance we have today has formed through centuries and retains enough old character. Pre-Christian beliefs contained enough elements comparable to those in Christianity that they could be organically incorporated into the newly dominated religion that took root here.

This. As Charleston pointed out, paganism never really died. I continued to live on as literary metaphors, art, spiritual themes, elves, fables, ect.

Well in some cases, it actually survived in its original form. As far as I know, some old beliefs remained in the Baltic but I'm not really sure 100%. What I do know is that old beliefs survived in isolated communities in Slovenia into the early 20th century. There are even some allegations that ethnologists discovered new offerings at certain holy caves in the 21st century, but I haven't seen any proof to these statements. These were apparently pre-Slavic beliefs that had its origin in pre-Slavic stone age natives.

You're right though, the old oral traditions of pre-Christian cultures survived on. In the case of Slavic cultures, the old gods were replaced with saints - it was basically just a change in name. many pre-Christian holidays were incorporated into the Christian structure and are celebrated in this form to this day.
