Statistically, 2016 was one of the best years in history. Easily top 10 due to the insane improvements of the past few decades.

Worst would probably be some random unotable year in antiquity or the Middle Ages where lots of people were dying from disease and nothing productive was happening.

There were many, many years where nearly the entire world was engulfed in plague, famine, and warfare. The 14th Century in particular was brutal, although I'm pressed to think of a specific year from it due to how chaotic it was.

at no point in history has there been so little famine, diseases, war, crimes, sadness, fear or death.

people are lot happier, they have all kinds of stimuli to keep them occupied and always increasing knowledge of psychology and med sciences allow people to treat different sicknesses properly.

it is a lot easier to find a partner today (you only need to have friends and enjoy your time with them) and even if you don't manage to do that you are still okay because there are videogames, porn, social media and drugs to keep you company

This is basically copypasta from Pinker and his pals. It's missing the point that people are calling it the worst year is because about 80ish famous people died. Heroes in entertainment- musicians, actors. The stuff they point to is just operationalising in a way that misses important factors in the use of the phrase. In short- they're right- but they aren't properly addressing why people are saying 2016 is the worst year. I'd add that they've been selling this research for a few years now.
