Because it's a pretty internally stable system. Even when there was civil strife, it was usually other members of the nobility jockeying for access to the crown most of the time. Compared to say, what the Romans went through, it could last much longer with fewer instances of half the realm trying to kill the other half.

what did he mean by this?

meme answer, the republic was stable as fuck you plebe

Because of the tradition of the Frank who were the first big dominant hegemon is the west since the fall of the WRE, so a lot of their culture and tradition got over all of Europe, like catholicism, latin as knoweldge language and the need to try to recreate the WRE.
So the frank(proto-french) did it again, like comunism.

The republic was only stable over a tiny area because expansion forced it to come up with a professional military class which destroyed the class balance of its society; with the army no longer neededing much of the rest of society, (or at least able to hold it at swordpoint), things got progressively less stable and military strongmen displaced both people and senate.

There's a reason that medieval republics were inevitably city-states again, not rural, spread out polities.

Not him and a massive pleb, but I thought it was the massive inequality and social ills that lead to strongman rising?

The republic was somewhat stable, at least as long as Rome was under threat. The empire however was horribly unstable as aristocrats and military strong men positioned themselves to challenge the throne.

>People show up in Europe
>Discover Agriculture
>By chance, Jim Bob's family gets better soil on his farm than Billy Joe's
>Everybody wants a piece of Jim Bob's booty
>No fighting, at least not yet
>Jim Bob's in the same tribe as your's
>Jim Bob jockeys his way to the top
>Jim Bob's individual power keeps the tribe from fracturing
>People obey him as to be protected and avoid punishment
>It just gets more complex from there

>Jim bob keeps getting more power
>dies and passes fertile soil on to his son
>son is named Jim Bob II
>Jim Bob II assassinated and land is confiscated by socialist revolutionaries

such is the way of life

I don't think passing shit on to your offspring was an exclusively European idea.

It was a combination of the breakdown and disrespect for Roman republican tradition among members of the senate, the abuse of broken aspects of how the senate functioned, and growing civil unrest within the city of Rome that lead to the rise of populist politicians, along with the senate being incapable of effectively preventing said politicians from garnishing large amounts of power. Even the "incorruptible" Cicero would bend and brake Roman law on occasion, one example being during the Cateline conspiracy, when Cicero brought in his personal armed guards to the Senate as a show of force -- this being illegal as weapons were forbidden in the city of Rome.

>be a powerful person
>have good relationship with current ruler
>entrusted with some political authority because of good relationship
>ruler is voted out/dies
>new ruler dislikes you, gives other people authority instead of you

This is why rulers ruled for life. The powerful people in a country that help the king rule want to keep the status quo for as long as possible under most circumstances, which is why they want the ruler to rule for life (as long as possible) and then for his son to take over when he dies, so that he may continue the previous king's policy
