Islam worked for a time under the Abbasids, whom were much more open-minded and acceptive towards their non-Arab subjects, unlike the previous expansive Umayyads. Which in turn led to the so called Golden age of Islam.
The problem is that it lasted for about a century before the entire thing collapsed and there were constant infighting and powerstruggle between different emirates and dynasties popping up all over the place cause they didn't have the same firm grip the Umads had.
And after losing control to the point that the Abbasids ruled pretty much over only Baghdad the Turks came around and took over the entire thing while keeping them as a puppet to claim the title of "Head of Islam".
