Look up the Sirtya people.

Supposedly they inhabited northern Europe and self exiled themselves to frozen wastes of Urals.
They are present in many of the northern European folklores under various names.

Common description about them is that they are short and are excellent craftsmen. They supposedly live in underground tunnels or caves or mountains. They are from whom the dwarves, gnomes, sneaky demons and similar myths come from.

Several colonial age explorers and traders who have visited Urals and Siberia have told stories about meeting short people who were really smart. Also, a certain tribe (I can't remember which) claims that they still had interactions with those people just a few generations back. They even claim that some of them made children with those gnome-folk.
