What advantages does mace have over warhammers? It seems just

It doesn't matter which angle you hit with, just bash around like a mad chimp.

Maces are much easier to wield than a warhammer. Also much cheaper. It's far easier to forge a lump of metal into a ball and give it some small spikes compared to forging it into an oversized hammer. Requires a much better smith and much more time to draw the metal out.
