That being said, such a radical approach was probably needed to drag Russia out of the sad state of affairs it was in, and arguably stopped it becoming a middle-eastern tier shithole.

Communism is retarded, but if you have enough people left after the inevitable decades of starvation and suffering, you can maybe have a semi-competent nation left provided you then adopt a non-retarded ideology.
