If by protestants you mean Lutherans and what came after, the reason was that it was not necessary to declare an official crusade.
Plus once the Protestant ideas spread and they got the most of northern Europe on their side, a crusade would have been too costly. They were too many.
A huge campaign of the Catholic South going all the way to Norway and Sweden and Scotland wasn't worth it.
The Spanish tried with Holland and England but those never returned to Catholicism.
