Were they really caused by Christians, or the Barbarian hordes?
No it was caused by your mom's fat ass

They didn't happen, so weren't caused by anything.
Justinian and his retard wars did.
Christian Barbarian hordes obviously
>Christian
>Dark
>Ages
The "Dark Age" would have been much longer if Christians weren't around to preserve literacy.
In effect, the Dark Age was only about 200 years long before literacy started picking back up, and since Literacy never actually stopped, it's not really a "Dark Age" but rather a dim one.
>What the dark ages were not
1000 years of total worldwide stagnation and then regression caused by barbaric Xtians who were hellbent on hoarding knowledge for themselves and halting progress at every turn until they were saved by the brave humanist efforts of the Renaissance propped up by the Islamic world of course
>What the dark ages were not
Non-existent
>What the dark ages were
A comparatively brief period in western European history where infrastructure and statecraft experienced a temporary lapse in expertise
Isn't the only reason they were called "The Dark Ages" was because historians thought no one was writing stuff down? No written history equals dark ages.
Turns out most of the records were just kept in church basements where people didn't look. No one likes to call them "Dark" any more.
As for their "decline" relative to the Roman Empire, sure. Trade slowed and people fled the urban centres for the countryside. The Catholic Church took over many state functions, taxes and governance, from the Roman Empire.
The Emperor was losing control of the western empire before Odoacer finally ended it in 476. Then there was no one left to pay the border guards, except the "Barbarian" kings, and the Church. Many Patrician families got high ranking positions in the Church, and used their authority to safeguard their communities, and negotiate with the "Barbarian" Kings.

The dark age wouldn't have started if they hadn't burned most things to begin with. I suppose we are to thank them for not burning everything.

It wouldn't have started if the inevitable collapse of the Roman Empire hadn't happened?
Well, the writing on the wall had been there since the third century

Nothing inevitable about it. Rome survived in the East.
