To be fair most of the orientalists were basically weeaboos who understood exotic cultures in whatever way was the coolest. And it wasn't just middle brow plebs, great names did this just as shamelessly.
If you don't understand the point of Said's book you really need to read more 18th-19th century authors.

The Orientalists sometimes had biased or otherwise incorrect opinions, and we're not held accountable for these missteps outside of their own circles, who often did not care to correct them in the first place. Said was a good polemicist against this sophistry, and helped to communicate East and West better, showing them the error in their ways. On the same level, it was not the primary goal of Orientalists to justify imperialism, nor did they even produce any semblance of a justification, in most cases. And with the fall of colonialism, and the immigration of Asians into the West, the entire book is little more than a milestone, important in it's own time, but useless now.
