What would Eastern Europe be like if it was still around?
I'm not necessarily saying the monarchy, I'm talking about a multi-ethnic super-state under a capitalist economic system. Could it survive? Might Bosnians, Serbians, Croatians, Austrians, and Hungarians put aside their differences when faced with a common threat (ie. Communism, Islam)?

I would have thought the fact that it's issues pretty much started the first world war would be the answer. Diverse, supraethinic states just haven't had much luck, given each individual group wants ultimate power over its own state.

Multi-ethnic European states can and do function, provided all the ethnicities are actually white and Christian. Just look at Switzerland, I don't see them breaking up. Austria-Hungary broke up not because of internal conflicts, but because of foreign interests.

Belgium
Spain
Finland
USA
Malaysia
Indonesia
Afghanistan
Britain

All of these countries exist, even if some of them are shitholes, yet I'm supposed to believe that Austria-Hungary just HAD TO dissolve?
