Seriously, I have no clue qhat postmodernism is getting at.

Is it a rejection of all preestablished structure and human thought in favor of something completely new? I try looking stuff up about it but i only get barebones information about its contrast to modernism.

To my admittedly not-comprehensive understanding, post-modernism is a rejection of many modernist and Enlightenment-influenced ideologies. Rejection of objectivity as a whole, penultimate subjectivity. From wiki:

"[Postmodernism] asserts that knowledge and truth are the product of unique systems of social, historical, or political discourse and interpretation, and are therefore contextual and constructed to varying degrees. Accordingly, postmodern thought is broadly characterized by tendencies to epistemological and moral relativism, pluralism, self-referentiality, and irony"

Its a shill if you ask me goym

Whats interesting is that it is defined by what it is not while being defined by exactly what it is.

Which is a five-dollar way of saying post-modernism says no structures are real and only as real as they are perceived to be real, which makes them real to the perciever but not real in a "real" sense (at least not to others), all the while solidifying postmodernisms own reality by being seen as a real structure that is or isnt viable as a reality depending on your viewpoint.

There's no end goal. It's just questioning the assumptions of modernism. It comes out of the social sciences, which tell us that humans are biased little cockroaches and don't give a shit about any kind of objective truth. Taken as a critique, it's a valid and makes modernist rationalism stronger.

If taken too far, it becomes a kind of intellectual nihilism where you believe nothing.

The other direction is you divert it into identity politics and become a post-modernist radical. Feminists, anti-racist, etc.

That would be modernism. Postmodernism does not try to create anything new and does so in an insincere manner.

Postmodernism

A general and wide-ranging term which is applied to literature, art, philosophy, architecture, fiction, and cultural and literary criticism, among others. Postmodernism is largely a reaction to the assumed certainty of scientific, or objective, efforts to explain reality. In essence, it stems from a recognition that reality is not simply mirrored in human understanding of it, but rather, is constructed as the mind tries to understand its own particular and personal reality. For this reason, postmodernism is highly skeptical of explanations which claim to be valid for all groups, cultures, traditions, or races, and instead focuses on the relative truths of each person. In the postmodern understanding, interpretation is everything; reality only comes into being through our interpretations of what the world means to us individually. Postmodernism relies on concrete experience over abstract principles, knowing always that the outcome of one's own experience will necessarily be fallible and relative, rather than certain and universal.

Postmodernism is "post" because it is denies the existence of any ultimate principles, and it lacks the optimism of there being a scientific, philosophical, or religious truth which will explain everything for everybody - a characterisitic of the so-called "modern" mind. The paradox of the postmodern position is that, in placing all principles under the scrutiny of its skepticism, it must realize that even its own principles are not beyond questioning. As the philospher Richard Tarnas states, postmodernism "cannot on its own principles ultimately justify itself any more than can the various metaphysical overviews against which the postmodern mind has defined itself."
