Nigeria and Sudan did a lot of stuff.

Like Sudan, Ethiopia has been open to influences from other civilizations like Yemen, Egypt, Rome, etc, so it adopted stuff like writing, cities, statehood, and Christianity. Civilization arose there around 800 BC and has been and developing ever since, while most sub-Saharan civilizations emerged much later (except Sudan).

The thing with much of Africa is that much of its history was recorded via poetry and oral singing by one guy, so it's hard to know the specifics about individual characters and seperate the fact from the fiction.
