Because the part that tankies always conveniently leave out was that the USSR was already in crisis by the time Gorbachev came to power. There was growing unrest in the constituent republics and shortages had become so bad that the USSR was essentially accepting surplus grain from the United States in exchange for not being as militarily aggressive. Someone like Gorbachev was needed to prevent things from getting completely out of hand.
The 90s could have definitely gone better for Russia but let's not pretend that the soviet system was somehow viable enough to last into the 21st century.
