Anything Averil Cameron, Brown, AHM Jones.
I'm reading pic related right now and I find it a really enjoyable read.
That said I'm not well versed in Byzantine history and from what I can tell Brownworth's credentials are that he's a high school history teacher, so I can't vouch too much for the quality of his research. Still, nothing had stood out to me as inaccurate, he hasn't said anything terribly controversial so far, and its made a good primer to find things to springboard later reading off of.
