When people started shooting them on sight

They've almost always been as far back as effectively commanding their army can allow. It's not cowardice either, killing the general at the outset is a near guarantee way to lose the battle and possibly war.

This thread isn't too bad. This could be an actual discussion.
During the American Civil War you have situations where Generals were killed quite often in combat.

His troops refused to advance unless he went back.
>Lee to the rear!
>Forming a hasty battle line, Gregg’s men began moving steadily across the field. Part way across, Lee joined them and appeared intent on leading the charge. But the Texans would not allow it. With shouts of "Lee to the rear!" they turned their commander back. The brigade then swept ahead into the opposite woods, checking the Federals and giving Longstreet time to bring up the rest of his corps.
