Cats are relatively useless. Along with vermin, they kill birds, snakes, lizards, and frogs- which tend to also eat pests.

Plus you can't easily compost cat manure like you can dog manure. You'd need a special vermiculture that only ate cat shit. Whereas you can mix dog shit in with your food scraps to make high quality worm castings.

In short, Dogs are the better deal. They've been known to protect humans from larger predators like cougars, bears, wolves, coyotes, foxes etc. While there are youtube videos of cats doing the same thing- dogs are reliably better at it.

Pigs are used for food, are smarter than both cats and dogs, can be used to find truffles, and can pretty much do anything better than a cat or a dog if trained.

I'd have to guess it'd be dogs for hunter-gatherer societies and cats for sedentary farming societies.
