Has satan ever been to hell? One pastor I like to listen to says that satan won't go to hell until the final judgement and that he currently roams the earth going to and fro like a lion, and he can go to heaven and back again on occasion, like in the book of job.

I'm currently reading Clement of Alexandria's Miscellanies where he states that
>according to Plato, "they think that good souls, on quitting the super-celestial region, submit to come to this Tartarus; and assuming a body, share in all the ills which are involved in birth, from their solicitude for the race of men;" and these make laws and publish philosophy, "than which no greater boon ever came from the gods to the race of men, or will come."
In other words the Platonists believed that this material world was "Tartarus" or hell. And that some souls would rationally consent to come down into matter to teach other souls the way of ascent. Such was the case with Pythagoras, Plato, etc. This very much resembles the Bodhisattva ideal in Buddhism.
