USS Indianapolis...sunk by a Japanese torpedo. 900 men went into the water...317 were rescued. The rest were eaten by sharks.

Why do we give so many of our ships such boring names? Naming them after presidents and pioneer folk heroes is pretty cool, but cities and states? Boring as fuck. And I'm still waiting on the USS Paul Bunyan and USS Jackalope.
fuckin' right!!!
>>2063891
Its the reverse for me.
I think states and cities are a way better naming scheme than political figures. That type of shit is how we ended up with the USS Gabriel Giffords.
Good idea...shit like USS Bugs Bunny and USS Scooby Doo. But those aren't very intimidating. How about USS Kill Evry One You Motherfuckers or USS Blow Your Ass to Hell

Same here

Yea, we drop bombs on people because we are in a war. We don't write fuck on airplanes because we aren't a bunch of thugs.

>bombing civilians
>not thugs

"""civilians"""

m8 cities/states/historical significance is way better
Names used to just be for DDs and DEs but now its our CVNs all named after presidents
Names like Saratoga, Lexington, Yorktown, Intrepid, and Hornet are all cooler imo

I'll grant you Intrepid and Hornet, and, hell, Lexington and Yorktown too -- I'm not saying we don't have any cool city or state names at all -- but nothing you can say will convince me that USS Indianapolis, USS Oklahoma and USS Rhode Island, for instance, aren't dull as fuck.
As far as politicians go I agree we should stick to the iconic ones with vivid historical connotations. Theodore Roosevelt, Daniel Boone and Dwight D. Eisenhower are good, the USS
Gabrielle Giffords is just embarrassing.

>The rest were eaten by sharks.
And the 300 inside were picked clean by crabs.
