As pointless and needlessly complicated as all the other non-monetary economies.

A nice idea, could work, but richfags rule the world and they will never let it happen. Just look at how successful they are at getting all the debtorfags to vote against their interests by spooking them with scary tales of 'unions' or 'climate change'.

Won't work. Currency as a means of exchange between goods and services exists to make transactions easier. There's a reason that even the AnSyns in Catalonia used currency, even if theirs was valued based on hours of labor rather than on fiat or a metallic standard.

I think OP is rather referring to a classic gold/silver standard reserve system, except it is based on y'know, actual resources. Water, carbon, energy stored in a battery, your sister's ova, rare earth metals, etc. No one's talking about trading a donkey for a new winter coat.

Our current economic system is based on debt. That is, our 'reserve' is not gold/silver, but the money created when a loan is fabricated out of thin air. Banks are generally given the authority to do this privately, at whim (national banks regulate the interest rate, which generally keeps things in check as a national bank wants). The idea is that this debt will be filled in (repaid) at some vague future point by 'created' wealth by someone doing something wise with that loan. A simplification, of course, because the actual global economy is much more complex and intertwined. Debt buys more debt, ad infinitum.

This works to an extent, and explains the last 60-70 years, but is not sustainable in the long-run (another century? two? three?). It creates a debt vacuum which must be constantly filled with growth or SHIT REALLY HITS THE FAN. Not to mention the absurd levels of national debt, which are also traded around as if they were concrete things.

Anything below a 3% growth target will make bankers sweat and shake. Human numbers probably need to level off soon, if not decline a bit. There frankly aren't enough resources on Earth for levels of 'necessary' growth for ever and ever. Expanding into developing markets (getting poorfag starving brown people to create some debt to build up their countries) has some problematic issues...

The higher the tower, the bigger the fall. The problem is, even a return to gold/silver is ridiculous at this point. So one floated solution is to switch to resources as our 'reserve'.

It's a nice idea, but I can't see the planet's current hegemonies voluntarily giving up the only basis of their position at the peak of the pyramid.

I was about to type a reply but I actually think you did a nice job. I would like to add to your post and OP that RBE can and does work in small altruistic/collectivistic communities where everyone acts on the same level. Even then tho, it oftentimes doesn't work out since things will get skewed.

Imagine this, you are living together in a community of people of let's say 25 people. Most of you have normal posture and can do with average meal sizes, however there are 2 guys who are buffed as fuck and want to have more food than the average. If this is accepted this is bound to piss some people off that have to stick to average meals. If it's not accepted it's bound to piss the 2 bugged guys of.

Hence, it'll never work on a meso/macro-level, only on a micro level. Beginning of space pioneering for instance, where the "greater good" is the mission.
