>>2054123
>That does look alright, but is this about replaying historical battles or are there skirmish modes too?

Yes, there's single historical battles, a campaign where fight small skirmishes and large historical battles with some lite RPG elements , and a skirmish mode that lets you set up battles. It's pretty fleshed out for a early access game.
>>
King of Dragon Pass is a shoo-in. The best game to get a feeling of bronze-age culture in general. Ironically the science-fiction Caves of Qud is also great at creating a bronze-age feel, but it is only a feel.

Dominions 4 is a better /his/ grandstrat than any Paradox game ever was. Paradox games are paradoxically overrated when it comes to history. The exception is M&B, which is God-tier.

Dark Souls must be considered. The original, specifically. Demon Souls too, probably, but I never played it. In this I am talking about feeling, atmosphere, similarly to KoDP.

Gary Grigsby games in general.

It's made by a small private developer/publisher. Graphic's aren't really the reason to play the game.

It's much more realistic than either of those games. There's no base building or unit production or anything like that. Its almost more of a combat tactics sim than game. Full TO&E for nations and what not. You can play it in real time but the better way is the WEGO system.

>>2056430
Idk, people have asked that before. The developer publisher doesn't want to be on there.

The only thing about the games since they're niche is they're expensive. The Normandy to Market Garden one for example is like $110 with all the expansions. I believe there are demos for at least some of the games on their site though.

I can't really recommend any Scourge of War. There are several things that bother me in them : The loss rate is ridiculously low compared to the efficiency of weapons. They say it is historically accurate, but I fail to comprehend how 400 musket shots can statistically only do one casualty. You can pit two entire compagnies in these games at point blank range for several minutes and they will only manage to do a few dozens of casualties. This is accounting the wounded, too !

Second problem : Cavalry doesn't charge at full speed, but rather is going at the trot. They say it was done this way, but then I wonder : why did they used horses at all ?

Third problem : The optimization is terrible. I wouldn't mind the bad graphics if at least it was going at 60fps. But topping at 16fps in battles for a 2D game in 2016 just doesn't cut it.

Fourth problem : You can't save a multiplayer game. You can't even change the speed in multiplayer games. This is important because a battle in those games can last half of a day, and many people can't afford to stay in front of their computers for that long, or maybe you just want to prevent your progress from being lost because of an internet connection problem. Most wargames offer the possibility to save the game, even in multiplayer.

Fifth problem : the interface is worse than Dwarf Fortress, because at least in Dwarf Fortress you don't have to use the mouse. I find that moving the camera and giving orders in Scourge is an hassle (one could say a... scourge, get it ?). The Order of Battle is a mess, it is very hard to know which echelon are you on, who are your superiors and subordinates and which units you really control. I feel like the game only hands you the bare minimum in term of ergonomics, it is like playing a game from the early nineties.

I wish they would just use the Total War engine to make realistic mods, instead of going along with this mess of an engine.
>>
>>2056473

>I can't really recommend any Scourge of War. There are several things that bother me in them : The loss rate is ridiculously low compared to the efficiency of weapons. They say it is historically accurate, but I fail to comprehend how 400 musket shots can statistically only do one casualty.

http://www.napolun.com/mirror/napoleonistyka.atspace.com/infantry_tactics_2.htm#infantrycombatmuskets2

>- According to R. Henegan the British infantry at Vittoria fired on average 459 rounds for 1 French casualty. (Henegan - "Seven Years' Campaigning in the Peninsula and the Netherlands", pp 344-345)

>Napier witnessed volleys fired by British infantry (in Spain) where out of 300 musketballs fired none hit the target.

>During one of the battles of the Revolutionary Wars, General Duhesme found his battalion firing at Austrian battalion at 100 paces. It was a lengthy firefight and Duhesme expected heavy casualties, he was however very surprised, there were only 3-4 men hit.

Dunno, seems pretty realistic to me.

Doesn't get much more historic than that. For real though the system of planning your battles instead of dragging your guys around by the collar as it's happening works much better on pretty much every level with the exceptions of accessibility and convenience. You can't just sit down and play some quick Dominions but when a week long campaign culminates in you completely flattening the other guy's army it feels so much better than anything offered by other games.

Is this a b8 post?

> there's nothing in BF1 that wasn't around during WW1

What kind of fucking asinine reasoning is that, fucking infrared sights were around during ww2, it doesn't mean they were widespread. The only semi automatic rifle that was widely issued during world war 1 was the french modele 1917, and only in the later stages of the war. I haven't even played BF1 but from what I've seen everyone and their dog seems to be toting semi-automatics, hipfiring fucking water cooled HMG's and submachine guns. Just because the weapons themselves existed at that time doesn't make the game historically accurate in any way.

Now mind you, I'm not arguing the game itself is bad, it's most likely just your regular run of the mill battlefield game, but to claim that it's historically accurate is fucking retarded.

>>
>>2059723

It's not that the weapons in it are being made up out of whole cloth, just that these weapons (particularly semi and full auto weapons) were incredibly experimental and, for the most part, used in tiny numbers. A better representation of fighting in the Great War would be bolt action rifles for the vast vast (>95%) of players for almost all of the game play.

It doesn't portray the reality of fighting in WWI. I am not saying it has to, or that it would be particularly compelling game-play, but no one should claim it is a window into understanding the history of the First World War.

Moreover, the depiction of tank warfare is basically totally wrong.

Rome 2 with DEI. Makes it so that things are a bit more "realistic". For example, you can only recruit core units in places which have a majority of your cultural presence, some units have a recruitment cap. The more armies camp in a region, the faster it runs low on supplies which leads to attrition. Attrition can be caused by a disconnect to supply lines, sieging, disease, low morale of men, low regional supplies. These are among the surface level changes to R2 in DEI, but you can just wait for Ancient Empires mod for Attila
