What are some good books on the rise and fall of the Soviet Union?
Animal farm is satirical and but I like it. If you haven't read it I highly recommend. I don't usually like reading but I actually like this one.

The Black book of Communism
Gulag Archipelago by Alexander Solzhenitsyn.
This book details a lot of history in the USSR from around 1919-1959.
It will also inoculate you against any romantic possession by Marxist ideology.

reading stories about prisoners from a poor background getting ass raped in state penitentiaries for petty theft or selling weed would probably inoculate against romantic conceptions of the usa but hey that's just the system mang :^)
