Slaves don't sit around wondering whether or not they're slaves. They're mostly busy with being whipped and working their asses off.

What do you mean? The 'Zeitgeist' is not an entity on its own, it's the sum of what we think. The Zeitgeist is the collective creation of mankind. You (or people on average) will change your way of thinking when your (widely interpreted) economic possibilities change - that will be mostly due to technological development. So no, it's more like vice versa.
