South Slavic is a dialect continuum, they could all be called "dialects" of the same language but for political reasons they are separate language, and since the Yugoslav wars they have grown apart from one another as they each borrow large numbers of words for the express purpose of differentiating themselves. Thus Croatian is borrowing German and Italian words, Serbian is borrowing Russian words, and Bosnian is borrowing Arabic and Turkish words. In a few generations, they will be unintelligible to one another.
