Whats are the differences between serfs and slaves?
>>2000898
Landowners were required to allow serfs some benefits, such as owning some of the products of their labor.
Chattel slaves are the legal property of a single person.
Serfs are tied to a particular estate/area of land. They serve whoever happens to own that land.

serfs believe they have choice, slaves understand they have none.
Serfs are essentially Helots.

Basically this.

Except the organized killing part.
>>2003058
Spartans were very afraid of Helots

slaves have their food and housing paid for by the master
serfs buy their own food and housing and still pay the master
Serfs traded their labor on a lease. Slaves do whatever their master tells them.

Serfs have legal rights and can sue their lords if mistreated (in England, anyway, Russian serfs were closer to slaves). Slaves often have legal protections, but they can't press legal suits themselves and their protections are typically quite limited. Serfs also didn't have to work all the time, in England they had half the year off in feast days and holy days, when slaves got any time off it would be a day or two per year at most.
