So what was the actual cause of the civil war? Because I hear a lot of conflicting opinions on the matter.

Separatism of South backed by British empire.

Literally butthurt. Southerners for the first time realized the north can vote in whoever they want regardless of the southern vote, they became irrelevant in the elections due to small population.

>So what was the actual cause of the civil war?
Short answer: slavery

Long answer: On June 17 2015 a young man named Dylann Roof walked into a historic black congregation in Charleston, S.C. and murdered 9 people. Subsequent investigations by the police and the press into his motives revealed that Roof was an ardent believer in the so called "Lost Cause of the South", a subculture of southern Americans who believe that the confederates were rebelling over states rights and significantly downplay the role that slavery played in Antebellum politics. This theory is particularly attractive for right-wingers who would rather imagine the confederates as small-government conservatives fighting the good fight against big-government yankees.

Unfortunately for them this incident attracted the attention of actual historians who read primary sources, who reminded people that each seceding state wrote a declaration of secession outlining in detailed fashion why they were going that route, and that these declarations were not ambiguous

This is the first sentence of Mississippi's declaration.
>Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization.

The real reason was that tge Democrat South lost power. Slavery debate was just one example of that.

Fun fact: Lincoln repeatedly said he wouldn't abolish slavery if it meant he could preserve the Union. But the dumb fuck Southerners were terrified of the fact that he had the North had the POWER to do that.

They weren't idiots, they knew that Lincoln would make all new states free states and therefore permanently tip the balance of congressional power in favor of the free states.
>Fun fact: Lincoln repeatedly said he wouldn't abolish slavery if it meant he could preserve the Union. But the dumb fuck Southerners were terrified of the fact that he had the North had the POWER to do that.
Lincoln was a compromise moderate elected on a platform of preventing slavery's spread to new states.

The true irony is that in all of his private correspondences Lincoln bitterly abhorred slavery, but it was only under emergency wartime powers that total emancipation became politically feasible. And it was only because the war dragged on for as long as it did that the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment became politically possible.

THE WAR WAS CAUSED ONLY BY THE SUCESSION OF SOUTHERN STATES. IF THE SOUTH DIDNT SECEDE THERE WOULD BE NO WAR. SUCESSION WAS CAUSED BY A MULTITUDE OF FACTORS; THE BIGGEST ONE WAS SLAVERY.

Anybody that says 100% slavery needs to be permabanned

South should have waited and held a constitutional convention to properly cecede instead of fucking off without due process and then firing on a Union fort, which was on land that had literally been sold to the feds.

Usually when people say "slavery" they're well aware they're oversimplifying. When people say things like "slavery caused the war" they're speaking informally and trusting that you're smart enough to infer that they mean "slavery was the single biggest cause of the war." No major historical event has ever had just one single cause; we may not all be geniuses on this board but I think it's fair to assume almost all of us understand that.
>>
>>2002016
you're right it wasn't just about slavery, it was about states rights

the states rights to legislate on slavery

>Anybody that says 100% slavery

except that nobody fucking saying that. slavery was the primary cause, so it's going to be the answer when someone asks what the cause was.

Money really. The south faced economic destruction due to lost political power. It was a do or die move.

The north championed themselves as heroes, everything went according to power
