I learned in a human sexuality course that Masturbation was not done a lot during the middle ages at least for high class people since they'd put on chastity belts on the teenagers so they wouldn't do unholy acts. And then when people grew up they never wanted because they didn't know it was possible. For more barbaric nations I have no idea.
