I think that Akhenaten's religion is better understood as 'rationalist' or 'naturalist' than as 'monotheist'.
Also, one should consider that the introduction of a single solar god, honored above all others, in a special relationship with the king, had been previously, probably with political motives, in the 4th Dynasty with Rê, who's almost unattested before then. I can't say what -they- tried to do about the other gods but interestingly Herodotus describes them as closing down the temples.
