As much as South Africa was a part of Britain
>>1993741
It was a French region divided into three department, the Saharian part was for military use like nuclear test.
>>1993762
and also South Africa actually did it's version of "No mom you be quiet " when they managed to force the Brits to to exile Seretse Khama with threats of withholding resources after the war.
That also is an example of how much power SA had compared to Algeria.

Did their inhabitants have the same rights and obligations as the French? like voting the president.
>>1993881
De Gaulle went on that line
> In all of Algeria there are only frenchmen with the same rights and the same duties
but in the referendum the independence won by a landslide
the red part was part of France
the Sahara was a colonial territory rules by the red part
local Europeans were French citizens
Arabs were French subjects and not citizens (no vote + can't be state fonctionnary + can't get higher then sargent + can have a passport but still not a citizen) it lasted until 1946
btw in Senegal there was 4 cities with the same situation les "Quatre communes" but with a difference : local africans get the French citizenship and had MP in the French parlement in 1916

Senegal is one of the few colonies that could have really been kept and fully integrated, if only it wasn't lumped in with Mali which wanted independence.
>>1994038
Gabon wanted to remain french, though
>>1994060
Yeah, they're another one. I think France could have managed to keep Djibouti, too.
>>1994062
They did until the 1970s though. In the French decolonization process Djibouti actually voted against independence. Having overseas territories on the African mainland is a shitty idea anyway. Look at how Ceuta and Melilla are used as an entry point into Fort Europe. And that's in the "good" part of Africa!

>De Gaulle went on that line
Wasn't De Gaulle one of the primary proponents of leaving Algeria because it was full of Muslims and he didn't want 40 million of them in France? Especially because he knew (predicted?) that they'd end up moving to the mainland anyway due to higher living standards?
