Japanese cinema and authenticity

I've understood that Yoji Yamada's Twilight Samurai(2002) is pretty accurate and it was also a pretty nice movie.

I recently saw "When the last sword is drawn" I found it very well done if not 100% accurate

Not sure abouth authenticity, but Kurosawa was very anal about his movies. He forced all the peasant actors to live like peasants in their village for the duration of the shoot and each of them had a dozen pages of backstory to memorize even if they were only background characters.
