The issue with recent strife in the middle East is not so much about Islam having martial tendencies but more about clerics and Imams framing everything in a religious framework. Clerics legitimately believe Bush invaded Iraq in 2003 because he was in cahoots with the Vatican and wanted to start a new crusade and the populace eats it up and goes full ackbar. There's no concept of secular motivations or realpolitik.

"peace" in Islam means something more like "submission" or even "slavery". Muslims believe they must wage war until the whole world follows Islam, and that they must be heartless and deceptive to unbelievers but kind and honest to fellow Muslims. So for them, they live in a state of "peace" by being the slaves of Allah and we live in a state of "war" because Allah has commanded the Muslims to wage ceaseless war against us.
