Basically they belonged to a Shia sect of Islam know as Ismailism. Their leader Hassan-i-Sabbah formed the group to fight against the enemies of the Ismaili's, such as the Ayyubid's and Byzantines. They would perform assassinations of key figureheads instead of waging direct wars against their enemies. The group was fond of mysticism and the hidden interpretation of the Koran. They were labeled "Hashashin" or "Assassins" because their enemies believed they used Hashish to get high.
