It was basically a wealthier and cooler version of India
They even built more epic Hindu temples than India itself
(Angkor Wat (Wat Vishnuloka)) and (Prambanan(Shivagrha)).
The cultural heir to the Khmer (Siam) even fended off European colonists and modernised.

Just because their culture has more representation in the West doesn't mean they were literally overshadowed. Apart from parts of Vietnam, East Asians never gained a foothold in SEA.
Indonesia has been the GOAT of the Muslim world since the Middle Ages. They even traded with aborigine kaffirs.
