None of my own opinions are here, I just made a list of things.

Why was he elected twice?

Because Labour import their voters and the Conservatives were in disarray for most of his premiership.

Because the Conservatives were in power from 1979 to 1997 and the working class had enough of Thatcher in the 1980s.

Surprisingly enough, John Major got more votes in 1992 (14 million if I remember) than the three times Thatcher was elected.

Blair came along and was seen as young and fresh, ready to invest more into public spending and for the working class. He was literally seen at the time as the Messiah, every one thought he was a smooth talker and a good debater, he had brown hair and looked young in comparison to John Major who was old with white hair and glasses. A lot of people had respect for John Major but he had his own problems (signing the Mastricht treaty) etc.

Blair campaigned under the phrase 'New Labour', in order to distance the party from its socialist past, this is why they weren't elected during the late 70s and 80s because the leaders were all old fogeys with very left leaning socialist ideals. Blair knew this as did the other people in the party his age and began to modernise under the banner of 'New Labour' under his smiling young face in contrast to the old Major. You have to remember that around this time the soviet union collapsed 1991 i think and the berlin wall came down. People didn't want socialism, they wanted more investment into public infrastructure without all the baggage. So there comes Blair, young, not very left but not very right.

Not to be pedantic but blair was elected three times, last time being in 2005 and he left in 2007 despite promising to serve his full term.

A very interesting story, is that him and Gordon Brown for years were rumoured to have made a deal to exchange the premiership after tony had served a term or two in a cafe in 1995 I believe. They denied it for years but Gordon Brown finally admitted it in his auto-biography. In 2007, blair resigns and hands it over to Gordon Brown. Funny stuff, Gordon Brown was expected to take it over from John Smith but they groomed Blair for the leadership.

Hell's a nice place, i'm hanging out with Alija and Franjo, the old man is kind of grumpy, but at least we're waiting for Thaci and Seselj, they're quite the bantmasters. Cosic and Rugova are in heaven, and Stambolic refuses to speak with me, but oh well, who need 'em
