All the augurs were predicting a win for Pompey Magnus. He had the backing of the entire Senate and more funding thanks to massive Greek donations.
However, unexpectedly low Spanish auxiliary turnout near the crucial swing city state of Pharsalus ended up costing Pompey his victory. Caesar managed to win the republic even though Pompey won the numerical advantage.
