What one might consider to be the right wing militias of the time similar to those we have nowadays. They were mostly comprised of moderates, socialists, and right wing army vets who saw bolshevism and communism as a threat to the country that would cause chaos and anarchy. Since all formal government had collapsed and the army was nonexistent the weak SOCIALIST government handed out weapons from army barracks and arsenals. The Freikorps routed the Spartacists and other Communist and Bolshevist groups and executed their leaders and members. They then conducted raids and fought against territorial incursions against the poles, lithuanins, and latvians. Several even served in white forces in russia. Eventually the league of nations told german government to stop the Freikorps from doing cross border fighting. The German goverment later dissolved the Freikorps after some of them turned on the goverment (think various putschs). A very interesting subject and I'm glad you asked anon.

There is so much wrong with this image, it's hard to know when to begin.

First, Clara Zetkin and Karl Leibnecht weren't Jewish, and the other choices of communist leaders is very selective. Radek barely had anything do with the Sparticist revolt.

Second, the Communist uprising was in 1919, not 1918. It was against the Weimar Republic, not the German Empire, and Ludendorf was not in power at the time.

Third, it was not the origin of the stab-in-the-back myth. That was the original November 1918 revolution that established the Weimar Republic.

Not to mention Ludendorf did not command, nor was he a part of any Freikorps organization. The closest to that was that he was part of the Kapp Putsh in 1920, an attempted coup against the government.

The Spartacist Revolt was quickly put down and in fact was not the major threat to the Weimar government at the time compared to the other Communist uprisisngs.

The picture labled german citizens are in fact communists. The picture labeled German soldiers are not german soldiers because the army was not functioning at the time due to demilitarizations. And both photographs labeled German Nationalists are in fact Freikorps with those in the lederhosen being members of Freikorps Werdenfels.

Also the government was run by the Socialist SPD party which had been democratically elected.

Many Stormtrooper officers were of Jewish origins and were just as angry towards the "losers" back home, which they blamed on socialist-communists.

Freikorps are hard to pin down. They weren't all right wing. Many socialists served in freikorps, especially in the Baltic campaigns. Ernst von Salomon writes about it in his semi autobiographical account of the freikorps called the Outlaws. There were monarchist freikorps (von lettow-vorbeck), proto fascist freikorps (Ehrhardt, Roßbach, von Epp) and there were also a myriad of smaller freikorps that varied greatly in their membership. Many did have a right wing tinge, and especially after 1921, most were definitely anti-democracy. Their movement went under ground in the form of the organization Consul, which held secret trials called the feme, which sentenced their enemies to death. Their victims were then assassinated. Later on in 1933 Hitler forced many freikorps leaders to submit to the Nazi party. Some agreed and others refused. Those that refused were marked for death in the night of the long knives. They were later rehabilitated. After ww2 they disappeared and became largely overshadowed by the Nazis
