Because of the way his theories and practice changed. When he started he acknowledged that he was simply trying to build a framework to better understand human behavior and specially a few symptons that seemed to have no rational explanation. To do this he emulated the models of hard sciences, all the while admitting that it was just a start and that in time his models would be completely replaced by the study of the brain. However, in later years his theories "evolved" into something much more cryptic, less scientific, and he dropped all pretenses of humility, basically saying that he was absolutely right and that his theories could be proved right ad-hoc in clinical practice, making any kind of serious attempt at checking the validity of his theories in practice impossible by any kind of scientific standard, because in the end, therapists saw what they wanted to see
By the end of his life his theory resembled something more akin to church doctrine than science. Lacan taking his work and adding a pile of ridicuous bullshit on top of it didnt help either.
Today freudian and lacan psychologists behave like medieval clergymen when it comes to their doctrine, Freud's and Lacan's work are threated as holy books, free of fault and with no room for improvement. Criticism is met with anger and for some reason they believe that modern psychology schools that try to use actual data to back up their claims are ridiculous (HERESY).
