Wilson's planned restauration would of course cost Germany money, but seeing how the last reparations were paid in 2010 (those were postponed leftovers though) and the partial French occupation and ensueing passive resistance and hyperinflation, it is safe to assume that Wilson's plan would have settled the matter much more efficiently.

The only mistake with Versailles is that it was neither harsh enough nor generous enough. The notion that they could have held onto the amputated provinces of Alsace-Lorraine while being defeated is hilariously selfish. You realize that the French and the Americans agreed on the reparations bill right? It was the British, not the French, who wanted a higher reparations bill because they wanted to include pensions rather than just material damage.

Also, what was "Wilson's plan"? The Treaty of Versailles generally conforms to the 14 points.

The Polish corridor (Germany's main territorial loss in the East and the most controversial) is in the 14 points too.

Anyway, the Germans were butthurt about losing, they would never have accepted any peace no matter how lenient. The only practical thing to do was create a peace that would prevent them from every disturbing the peace of Europe again.

I have this opinion now somewhat, Wilson was too idealistic and wonky with his policies. He made Versailles soften the edge of the final whooping France wanted of Germany, and he also tried to pull the U.S. into Europe into his shitty club Europe begrudgingly accepted later. Thank god it was not possible for us to actually lose WW1 and thank the Senate stopping the U.S. from accepting Versailles or the League.

I also think it's even more funny when you read about how he got elected in the first place. Roosevelt ran against Taft with the Bull Moose, dividing the Republican vote letting Wilson get a quick win.
