It arguably already is. Saudi Arabia might have money and oil, but they've got very little actual power. Utterly dependent on the West, utterly dependent on oil, can't stop funding Wahhabism abroad but have to brutally clamp down on it at home. The Saudi government has almost no leeway when it comes to deciding policy, and their current course is bound to destroy them sooner or later.

By contrast, Iran has already proven it can survive without the support of the 'international community', giving it freedom to project power across the region. Not to mention that the Saudi armed forces are a joke and Hezbollah > whatever second-rate militias the Saudis can rustle up.

If they can win their gambit they might very well be.

Right now they're trying to:
- keep Assad in power in Syria - not going that badly, all things considered
- keep a friendly power block in Lebanon - going quite well with Aoun being elected president
- keep the Shi'a in power in Iraq - going pretty well, they pretty much discarded the theological disputes with the Najafi ulema and are going for Popular Mobilization Units support, which are a pretty good instrument of pressure on the Iraqi government, as disbanding them would antagonize 60% of population
- win the Houthi insurgency in Yemen - going stellar, with Ansarullah actually occupying Saudi warbases and the crownprince suing for peace. If Americans don't meddle, they're going to win
- rouse the Shi'a population in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain - not yet in progress. It's however noteworthy that the largest oil deposits in KSA are on Shi'a a majority lands
- continue to bump fists with Armenian bros to keep Azerbaijan in check - going pretty well
- keep on Turkey's good side - going pretty well since the July mending of relations between Russia and Turkey, although Iran has been somewhat absent from their cooperation.

So far they've done pretty well, kept from overt confrontation and played their cards safe.

You need influence outside to be the "dominant power". You know, influence to dominate. It doesn't matter how good is Iran doing (in this specific debate) because they're not influential. Iranians are better not giving a fuck about what arabs do as long as they leave Iran alone, anyways.

Im not sure about that. I mean Iran is currently controlling basically 4 arab capitals (Baghdad,Beirut,Damaskus and Sanaa) and maybe in near future even 5 with manama. So their influence is growing considering that all their supported parties are winning in their respective struggles

Sorry, not being a native english speaker I didn't express myself well enough. I wasn't saying that they're not able to exercise influence at all, but that their ability to exercise it is limited. Without the support of the west, Iran cannot really hope to become the hegemonic power in the region. And for a couple of reasons (read Israel and the gulf arabs) an Iranian-Western alliance is still a very distant scenario.

I really hope Clinton doesn't keep her promise of invading the country.

Well yeah o f course its limited but its big enough to be a mayor power in iran. Keep in mind that the Shia parts in saudi arabia are also the parts with the biggest oil reserves. If they could get a grip on this region alongside the countries i already mentioned then they could be a really strong power with so much oil in their hands that they could seriously influence the world market.
