It's more plagiarism. When you listen to 19th and early 20th century songs it's clear that the rise of the turbofolk genre (which didn't exist prior) comes from getting easy money by plagiarizing Turks during the the communist and post communist years.

No, folk songs weren't banned, it was just a cheap and easy way to cash, combine some original elements with some copied beats. It just became very popular.
