I strongly assume (without evidence) that Zizek got popular with the rise of youtube. He's obscurantist and weird enough that he seems like a real intellectual, but he's funny and pop culture friendly enough that he works well as an entertainer. His great talent is that he can make some amusing/interesting point in one bite sized anecdote. Perfect for the 4 minute youtube video that gets shared among friends.

That's how I found out about him.
