Nothing sophisticated enough that there's all that much documentation of it, save for European and Arab explorers who went there. They had some "nations" sure, (although the subjectivity of that term gets in the way) but ultimately they were just one tribe that became bigger that the rest, they never ventured outside of their respective portion of Africa.

There are fuckloads of books sitting in Timbuktu waiting to be translated. Likewise in Ethiopia. Al Qaeda burnt a lot of them but most of them are still there.
