yeh sure there's some back and forth bitching but both groups have a lot in common as well, more than with the french (wallonia has, outside of napoleon's rule, never been part of france) or the dutch (flanders has been united with the dutch for exactly 15 out of the last 400 years

Swiss cantons are a collection of Flanders and Wallonias, with the difference that at least the Belgian ones havent been at war with each other every now and then like the Swiss have.

Their Confederal government is also extremely peculiar.

Belgium in itself is a meme. And this is comming from a Belgian, did you know that the countries motto is 'strenght in unity' but that we as a country have 7 different goverments that constantly try interfere with eachother.

But spiliting belgium between france and netherlands wont do much either, besides how much Bart De Wever comes in the news with his 'Muh confederacy, muh flanders independance' most flemish and waloon people have nothing against eachother and prefer this above being part of France or Netherlands

Serious question: why does this country still exist?

From what i understand, it's a tri-cultural state where the two main cultures absolutely hate each other. The anglos speak English, while the francos speak French.

So why not give French Canada to France and the Yukon and Northern Territories, with parts of over provinces to the Indigenous? Wouldn't that work way better then creating this arbitrary dysfunctional country?

We've had some attempts by the French to separate (the last referendum was about as close as the Scottish one) but they didn't.

The reality is France probably wouldn't take Quebec (even without the "everyone hates quebec" it's just a politically stupid move) and without the fed government literally propping up the French language Quebec would probably anglicize a lot faster independent than part of Canada. The Feds are basically catering to things like bilingualism and allowing Quebec to do their own thing. We have all sorts of laws for product packaging, bilingualism in the federal government, permitting discriminatory provincial laws in Quebec because they favor French culture, etc.

Generally though "absolutely hate each other" is pushing it. There's a lot of bitterness but not to a violent extent (saving a few cases of quebecois terrorism you could count with one hand).

As for the natives up north when you look at populations they're not really a threat to anybody.

It's got tensions but not to the extent of "dysfunction", it'd be about as valid as America giving the south independence or letting blacks have their own state.
