Did diogenes really exist? His story is so bizzare.. I think he was invented to create a mythilogical type character who cpuld be used as a literary device to denounce plato

Well what is it you like about Diogenes? Most of what we know about him is anecdotal and none of his writings survived.
If you're interested in Cynic philosophy you'd better of checking out Crates of Thebes or Antistenes, but if you're into him for the witticisms and stuff you could probably just read about him on Wikipedia.
