Why did Hitler try to link himself and the German People to the Aryans

If the Indians rebelled full scale, it would mean the British get supremely fucked. Plus in every world history book it still says that India was founded by Aryan invaders. Most Indo European peoples have similar pantheons, suggesting an evolution from a common source.

He wasn't a white nationalist, he was a German nationalist.

Hitler didn't invent the Aryan gimmick, you can already find it in Gobineau's H.S. Chamberlain's works. Based on the interpretation of ancient Indian and Persian texts, people saw the Aryans as a conqueror people who founded civilizations everywhere. It was hypothesized that light-skinned Northern Europeans were the Aryans in their purest form. Indian's weren't seen as Aryan in that sense because they were mixed with the Dravidians, who had been subjugated by the Aryans.

There is literally no direct evidence of them being white. There is also no evidence of them being from Eastern Europe. Virtually all evidence points to them being either natives of Indus Valley who spread outward to Central Asia and Europe, or a group from Central Asia that spread to Indus Valley, Europe, etc.

I always thought germanics were a sort of synthesis culture/race of indo-europeans and whatever native european people lived there before.

At the time the concept of an indo-european language group (of which german is a member) was conflated with the indo-aryan ethnicity, which which with modern haplotyping techniques we know to be erroneous. Germans also didn't have a concept of "white" like you Anglos, he would have loathed the KKK and included many blacks, arabs, indians, japanese, etc in his army.
