>1 Kings 18:21-24
>21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. 22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the Lord; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. 23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: 24 and call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

This is seen as evidence of YHWH and Ba'al cult rivalry as a result of both being storm gods, but this chapter isn't to see who's the stronger god, but to see who's Elohim. Elohim is a plural form of god, but it's also used as a name for YHWH, usually translated as God.

>Most use of the term Elohim in the later Hebrew text imply a view that is at least monolatrist at the time of writing, and such usage (in the singular), as a proper title for the supreme deity, is generally not considered to be synonymous with the term elohim, "gods" (plural, simple noun). Hebrew grammar allows for this nominally plural form to mean "He is the Power (singular) over powers (plural)", or roughly, "God of gods".

Did Ba'al also have a monotheist/monolatrist cult develop?

>twenty threads up about the Bible

There's more history without it than with it, start discussing different topics about man
>>
>>1903138
I thought it would be nice to provide some original content, as I haven't seen scholars take this point of view before. The generic christian threads we have up all the time are shit, but this is for discussing specific analysis of the text. plus I've used a passage from Kings, which, although not exactly obscure, isn't discussed as much as say Genesis
>>
Fuck you, guy. It's a good thread idea OP, it's an interesting concept imho, the formation and self identification of some sort of proto-Judaism. Unfortunately it's not exactly a specialist field of mine, but I'm monitoring with interest.

Monolatrist, yes. This was in fact the norm for Canaanites of the period, each city or tribe would have a patron god with a temple and an organised cult, early Judaism was no different in this regard.
>>
>>1903438
national god doesn't necessarily imply monolatrism. patron gods for polities is as old as the sumerians. The Meshe stele does show similar language to judges but nowhere does Chemosh punish Moab for worshipping other gods
>>
>>1903572

Other Canaanite religions lacked one key ingredient of Judaism which is its "code of laws" or commandments. This is the Egyptian innovation that Moses brought to the mix, without anything similar there was no precedent for punishing deviations from monolatry.

It's even better.
In the pan-canaanite pantheon, they were considered brothers, sons of the chief god El. This triggered a lot of jews, which is why it's shit on every 2 pages.
>>
>>1903592
I'm not sure there's enough data to go off of for that. only contemporary religious sources i know of are the Ugarit texts and the Meshe stele. i can't remember the verse but in judges in the Abimelech story there's a place name Ba'al of the Covenant
>>
>>1903119
Judaism wasn't monotheistic before Moses and Yahweh met on top of Sinaj
>>
>>1903738
disregarding the question of the historicity of that event, what I'm referring to happened long after the alleged exodus
>>
>>1903134
We know it has been influential because it was put in a historical context
>>
>>1903750
Oh.. yeah you're right. Sorry I'm too tired to think straight.
>>
>>1903711
citing this:
Judges 9:4
They gave him (Abimelech) 70 shekels from the temple of Ba'al-berith (ba'al of the covenant); the same place is named later in 9:46 as El-berith
>>
Now when the Philistine's Dagon statue bowed to the tabernacle, was that just God dicking around with the statue or was that Dagon himself acknowledging God's supremacy?
>>
Ba'al is a title not a name.
Ba'al denotes lordship or a position of leadership.
The Elohim are a group of individuals and as such have a leader.
This leader was Anu.
>>
>>1903822
seems to me that it's more so just making a mockery of Dagon. I went back to the passage and the second time Dagon falls over his head and hands were cut off.

>>1903837
Ba'al is a title but it's often shorthand for Ba'al Hadad. in this story it's already been established that Ba'al Hadad is the specific god in question.

I was rather confused by your Anu remark since El is the head of the Canaanite pantheon. I can't find Anu in reference to Canaanite religion (he certainly isn't in the Ugarit texts as I own a copy of them) but I did find Anu as a Sumerian god
