The Holocaust is Israel's Raison D'être. After the absolute devastation of the European jewish community it was decided that instead of attempting to rebuild it as it was a majority jewish nation should be created so that jews can look out for eachother and ensure that something like this never happens again. If you imply that the holocaust did not happen then what need is there for Israel?

While its true that pre-holocuast antisemitism did drive zionism, the holocuast has taken on a special significance in the Israeli national identity. Remember when former President Ahmadinejad of Iran cast doubts on the scale of the Holocaust, or even if it happened at all? This was done specifically to undercut Israeli legitimacy.

Curiously though, I also remember him saying that since the holocaust was done by Germans that Israel should have been carved out of german land rather than arab land. I have to say in this regard I agree with him, now we just need to build a time machine...
