Why do shiites take a more relaxed view of religious imagery

There's nothing relaxing about that Day of Ashura/whatever you call that holiday where shiites baaaw about Hussein and cut theirselves up.

Though as a Catholic from the Philippines we have our own bloody rituals.

I would take that with a grain of salt- this is an example of politics over religion. Iran, where the majority of these Ayatollah are from/ where they look up to, is trying to appeal to the world and Muslim world at large, and is thus create a modern appealing image of Iran that isn't too crazy for the sunnis. Can't do that if your main Holiday involves flagellation and cutting yourself on the forehead
